Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment (CPFR) is an approach which aims to enhance supply chain integration by supporting and assisting joint practices. CPFR seeks cooperative management of inventory through joint visibility and replenishment of products throughout the supply chain. Information shared between suppliers and retailers aids in planning and satisfying customer demands through a supportive system of shared information. This allows for continuous updating of inventory and upcoming requirements, making the end-to-end supply chain process more efficient. Efficiency is created through the decrease expenditures for merchandising, inventory, logistics, and transportation across all trading partners.

- Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment (CPFR, engl. Abk.), wortwörtlich gemeinsame Planung, Prognose und Bestandsführung, bezeichnet eine konsequente Weiterentwicklung des Efficient-Consumer-Response-Konzeptes mit der Grundidee der gemeinsamen Nutzung und Zusammenführung von Informationen auf Hersteller- und Handelsseite zur Distribution und im Marketing. Ausgehend von Marktprognosen soll eine gemeinsame Planung erstellt, die Produktion und Lagerhaltung der tatsächlichen Nachfrage angepasst und Warenfluss und Verkaufsförderungsmaßnahmen aufeinander abgestimmt werden. Der Konsument soll dabei wieder im Fokus der Zusammenarbeit stehen. CPFR unterscheidet sich vom bisherigen ECR-Konzept dadurch, dass die Verbesserungsprozesse nicht mehr einseitig durchgeführt werden können, sondern nur noch in einer echten Zusammenarbeit. Es muss der Wille bestehen, Daten nicht nur auszutauschen, sondern die Verbesserung der Datenqualität zu messen. Ein weiterer Unterschied besteht darin, dass die für eine erfolgreiche Umsetzung von ECR bisher notwendige kritische Masse nicht mehr erreicht werden muss; für den Erfolg durch CPFR reicht es für ein Handelsunternehmen aus, ohne größere Aufwendungen gemeinsam mit einem Hersteller Prognosen zu bilden. CPFR soll die ECR-Strategien nicht ersetzen, sondern die Erfahrungen nutzen und funktionierende Praktiken ergänzen, um eine neue Stufe der Zusammenarbeit zu erreichen. O CPFR pretende ser uma alternativa válida ao Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) aproveitando os aspectos positivos deste, mas apresentando mais soluções no lado da procura. Tendo o ECR uma maior focalização no fornecedor, sobretudo na redução dos custos e agilização das empresas, o CPFR vem trazer uma maior preocupação pelo cliente final, através da gestão conjunta de processos e da troca de informação (Carvalho et al., 2000, p. 148). Este programa encontra-se sobre a alçada do VICS (Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Standards) (Carvalho et al., 2000, p. 144). O CPFR é um modelo onde o aperfeiçoamento é realizado de uma forma contínua, havendo a necessidade de experimentar, analisar, inovar e de novo experimentar. A importância que a colaboração assume em diversos aspectos, tanto na indústria como no varejo, revela-se como a principal vantagem deste programa.
