Cimatti was an Italian manufacturer of bicycles, motorcycles and mopeds active between 1937 and 1984. In 1937, the Olympic cyclist Marco Cimatti founded a small company in Bologna that originally produced bicycles. In 1950, he changed to mopeds, and in the 1960s, started producing motorcycles, including the 100 cc (6.1 cu in) and 175 cc (10.7 cu in) Sport Luxury road and Kaiman Cross racing models with four-speed gearboxes. In 1972–77, he introduced two 125 cc (7.6 cu in) models, one for motocross with a five-speed gearbox and the other for road. In those years Cimatti's son Enrico expanded the business to export motorcycles to the United States, France, Norway and Tunisia. | - Cimatti war ein italienischer Fahrrad- und Motorradhersteller. Das Unternehmen wurde 1937 vom Radrennfahrer und Olympiateilnehmer Marco Cimatti in Bologna gegründet und produzierte zunächst Fahrräder. Im Jahr 1950 kamen Zweitakt-Mofas und -Mopeds hinzu, später folgten dann auch leichte Motorräder. Zwischen 1966 und 1968 gewannen Maschinen von Cimatti dreimal in Folge die italienischen 50 cm³-Trial-Meisterschaften. Als einer der ganz wenigen italienischen Motorradhersteller überlebte das Unternehmen die weltweite Wirtschaftsflaute bei Herstellern von Kleinmarken in den 60er Jahren. In den 70er und 80er Jahren produzierte das Unternehmen zahlreiche motorisierte Modellreihen, unter anderem auch das „City-Bike“ und das etwas größere „Town-Bike“. Verwendet wurden Zweitaktmotoren von Moto Morini und Moto Minarelli. Unter der späteren Leitung von Enrico Cimatti, dem Sohn des Firmengründers, belieferte die mittlerweile unter dem Namen Ditta Cimatti en Cimatti Enrico S.p.A. geläufige Firma auch den Markt in den U.S.A., Frankreich, Norwegen und Tunesien. Met Cimatti ging het echter goed. Hoewel het merk weinig interesse toonde in de motorsport, wonnen coureurs met Cimatti-machines in 1966, 1967 en 1968 het Italiaanse 50cc-Endurokampioenschap. Daarop ging Cimatti meer functiegerichte terreinmotoren maken en verschenen de 100- en 175cc Sport Lusso en Kaiman Cross Competizione, naast gewone straatmodellen met dezelfde cilinderinhoud. Al deze modellen hadden vier versnellingen. De terreinmodellen verdwenen echter tamelijk snel weer, maar in 1972 kwam men terug met 125cc-crossmotoren met vijf versnellingen. Halverwegen de jaren zeventig nam Enrico Cimatti, de zoon van Marco, de leiding van het bedrijf over. Hij ging zich veel meer op de export richten. In 1977 werden uitsluitend nog bromfietsjes geleverd, veelal met slechts een versnelling en een automatische koppeling en daarmee hield het bedrijf zich bezig tot de sluiting in 1984. (nl)
