A veces se le conoce como el "Padre de Texas Panhandle." El ensayista e historiador dijo que Goodnight "se acercó a la grandeza más cerca que cualquier otro de la historia." Il arrive au Texas en 1846 et débute comme cow-boy en 1856. Il combat les Indiens comanches, puis il rejoint les Texas Rangers. Au début de la guerre de Sécession, il rejoint les confédérés. Une fois le conflit terminé, il conduit du bétail du Texas vers le nord et il met au point le . En 1866, il avait chargé une diligence de l'armée de tout ce dont les cow-boys faisant route vers l'Ouest avaient besoin pour se sustenter : haricots secs, farine de maïs, viande séchée, café… l'ancêtre du camion-restaurant était né. Le 26 juillet 1870, il épouse Mary Ann (Molly) Dyer, une institutrice de Weatherford au Texas. (fr) Charles Goodnight (* 5. März 1836 in Macoupin County; † 12. Dezember 1929 in Phoenix, Arizona) war ein Viehzüchter in den USA, der Ranching betrieb. 1856 wurde er Cowboy und beteiligte sich an den Kämpfen gegen die Comanchen. 1857 wurde er Texas Ranger. Im Bürgerkrieg beteiligte er sich auf der Seite der Konföderierten Staaten von Amerika an den Kämpfen. 1866 trieb er zusammen mit eine Viehherde nach Norden. Dieser Weg trägt heute den Namen Goodnight-Loving Trail. Ebenfalls auf Goodnight geht der Chuckwagon zurück. 1870 heiratete er Mary Ann Dyer und erfand für sie einen Damensattel. (de)
