The Cerdonians were a Gnostic sect founded by Cerdo, a Syrian, who came to Rome about 137, but concerning whose history little is known. They held that there are two first causes—the perfectly good and the perfectly evil. The latter is also the creator of the world, the god of the Jews, and the author of the Old Testament. Jesus Christ is the son of the good deity; he was sent into the world to oppose the evil; but his incarnation, and therefore his sufferings, were a mere appearance. Regarding the body as the work of the evil deity, the Cerdonians formed a moral system of great severity, prohibiting marriage, wine and the eating of flesh, and advocating fasting and other austerities.

Sostenía Cerdón que este mundo no era obra de un Dios todopoderoso, sabio y bueno así como tampoco la ley de Moisés que le parecía imperfecta y demasiado rigurosa. En su consecuencia admitía dos principios de todas las cosas, el uno bueno y el otro malo: a este último era al que atribuía la fabricación del mundo y la ley de Moisés. Cerdó defensava que el món no era obra d'un Déu totpoderós i bo, sinó que hi havia dues causes primeres: la perfecta i la imperfecta. Aquesta última causa l'assimilava a un Déu imperfecte, que va crear el món. Era el Déu dels jueus i l'autor de l'Antic Testament. La Llei de Moisès li semblava imperfecta i massa rigorosa. L'altra causa o Déu, a qui anomenava "principi desconegut" era el pare de Jesucrist, que va ser enviat al món per oposar-se al mal. Però la seva encarnació i els seus sofriments només eren aparença. Els cerdonians sembla que no admetien la resurrecció dels cossos, només la de les ànimes. Rebutjaven els llibres de l'Antic i el Nou testament i només admetien l'Evangeli de Lluc, i encara en part. Consideraven també que el cos, com a obra del Déu inferior, havia d'estar sotmès a un rigorós codi moral i prohibien el matrimoni, el vi i la carn, defensant el dejuni. Most of what the Church Fathers narrate of Cerdo's tenets has probably been transferred to him from his famous pupil Marcion, like whom he is said to have rejected the Old Testament and the New, except part of Luke's Gospel and of Paul's epistles.
