Sua fama meteórica e declínio igualmente dramático é comparada com a de Paul Morphy e ele é algumas vezes citado como o Morphy inglês. De Vere contraiu tuberculose por volta de 1867 e pouco depois se tornou dependente do álcool. Cecil Valentine De Vere byl od svých dvanácti let (1857) žákem silného londýnského hráče Francise Burdena (1830-1882). Roku 1859 se stal členem Londýnského šachového klubu a od roku 1860 běžně hrál v šachové kavárně Simpson’s Divan. Roku 1864 sehrál řadu utkání s Georgem Alcockem MacDonnellem a vyhrál většinu z nich. Roku 1865 porazil Wilhelma Stenitze 7:3 (=2), ale Stenitz mu poskytl výhodu pěšce a tahu. (cs)

He was born Valentine John Cecil De Vere Mathews in 1846. It is likely that he was the illegitimate son of William Cecil De Vere, a naval officer and son of the second Baronet of Curragh. His mother was Katherine Mathews, a Welsh-born household servant. He played chess effortlessly and elegantly without recourse to chess study or theory; in this respect he was not unlike José Raúl Capablanca. His meteoric rise to fame and equally dramatic decline has been compared to Paul Morphy and he is often cited as 'The English Morphy'.
