Su construcción fue contratada por Juan de Castellanos y Gonzalo Suárez Rendón al maestro , quien comenzó trabajos en 1567. Su estilo puede ubicarse dentro del gótico isabelino, aunque algunas remodelaciones posteriores han adicionado elementos neoclasicistas a la construcción; cuenta con una sola torre y su interior está conformado por tres naves con capillas laterales. Se destaca la portada de estilo renacentista diseñada por Bartolomé Carrión en 1598. El sector histórico de Tunja (incluyendo la catedral) fue declarado Monumento Nacional de Colombia por la Ley 163 del 30 de diciembre de 1959. (es)

Son style a évolué entre le gothique isabélin et quelques modifications ultérieures néoclassiques. Elle ne compte qu'une seule tour et, à l'intérieur, se trouvent trois nefs avec des chapelles latérales. On distingue particulièrement le portail de style Renaissance, dessiné par Bartolomé Carrión en 1598. Le centre historique de la ville, incluant la cathédrale, a été déclaré « Monument national » le 30 décembre 1959. (fr)
