Oberland (German for Highlands) was the name of a canton of the Helvetic Republic (1798–1803), corresponding to the area of the Bernese Oberland, with its capital at Thun.

März 1798 zerbrach die alte, am Berner Patriziat orientierte Ordnung im Kanton Bern, und von seinem Territorium wurden in der Folge die Waadt, das Berner Oberland und der Unteraargau abgetrennt. Das Berner Oberland spielte sowohl beim Einmarsch der französischen Truppen unter General Guillaume Marie Anne Brune wie auch bei der Neukonstituierung von Staatlichkeit im Regionalen und Nationalen ebenso bedeutende wie ambivalente Rollen. De bezetting door de Franse troepen in 1798 was het einde van het toenmalige grote kanton Bern. De bij Bern behorende gebieden Vaud, het Berner Oberland en de Onderaargau werden afgesplitst. Zoals in heel Zwitserland was men ook in het Oberland niet enthousiast over de nieuwe ordening; er bestonden geen separatistische bewegingen. Al in 1801 was de hereniging met Bern gepland.
