Callirhoe (or Chaereas and Callirhoe (Ancient Greek: Τῶν περὶ Χαιρέαν καὶ Καλλιρρόην) which more closely aligns with the title given at the head of the manuscript) is an Ancient Greek novel by Chariton, that exists in only one (somewhat unreliable) manuscript, from the 13th century. It was not published until the 18th century, and remained dismissed until the twentieth. It nevertheless gives insight into the development of ancient prose fiction. It is one of five Ancient Greek novels known today.

It was not published until the 18th century, and remained dismissed until the twentieth. It nevertheless gives insight into the development of ancient prose fiction. It is one of five Ancient Greek novels known today. Evidence of fragments of the text on papyri suggests that the novel may have been written in the mid 1st century AD, making it the oldest surviving complete ancient prose romance and the only one to make use of apparent historiographical features for background verisimilitude and structure, in conjunction with elements of Greek mythology, as Callirhoë is frequently compared to Aphrodite and Ariadne and Chaereas to numerous heroes, both implicitly and explicitly. As the fiction takes place in the past, and historical figures interact with the plot, Callirhoe may be understood as the first historical novel; it was later imitated by Xenophon of Ephesus and Heliodorus of Emesa, among others. Descrive le avventure di due giovani innamorati siracusani. La sua datazione è controversa poiché per diverso tempo non si è riusciti a stabilire se questo romanzo fosse stato scritto durante il I o il V secolo. Ma grazie alla menzione del testo riscontrata su due antichi papiri provenienti dall'Egitto e datati II o III secolo è stato possibile anticipare largamente la collocazione cronologica del romanzo in questione. Esso è considerato uno dei Big five (dei cinque grandi), un termine inglese con il quale gli studiosi internazionali definiscono i 5 romanzi di epoca greca che trattano il genere letterario dell'amore, dell'avventura, dell'eroismo giunti integrali fino ai nostri giorni. Gli altri quattro sono: Racconti efesii di Anzia ed Abrocome di Senofonte Efesio; Gli amori pastorali di Dafni e Cloe di Longo Sofista; Leucippe e Clitofonte di Achille Tazio; Le Etiopiche di Eliodoro di Emesa. Il romanzo di Cherea e Calliroe inizialmente venne considerato come l'ultimo dei Big five, ma con gli studi recenti e le conseguenti conclusioni si è più inclini a credere che esso sia in realtà il primo dei cinque per ordine di datazione e dunque risulterebbe oggi come il più antico romanzo scritto giunto integro in epoca contemporanea.
