The Burnt Islands (Scottish Gaelic: Na h-Eileanan Loisgte) are three small islands that lie in the Kyles of Bute, on the Cowal Peninsula, Argyll and Bute, on the West coast of the Scottish mainland. The islands are located at grid reference NS017752. All water going traffic that travels through the kyles has to negotiate either the narrow sound that separates Eilean Buidhe from Eilean Mòr and Eilean Fraoich or pass south of the islands, via the Wood Farm buoy. The narrows, which are the principal route for commercial traffic, are marked by four light buoys, two on each side.

Angeblich befindet sich dort eine Begräbnisstätte aus der Zeit der Wikingerbesetzung. Die drei Inseln befinden sich nahe dem nördlichsten Punkt der Kyles of Bute am Abzweig von Loch Riddon östlich von Buttock Point, dem nördlichsten Punkt der Insel Bute. Die westlichste der drei Inseln heißt Eilean Fraoich, was Heideinsel bedeutet. Sie weist eine Länge von 280 m und eine Breite von 160 m auf und wird als felsig mit wenigen Bäumen beschrieben. Die größte Insel, Eilean Mòr, ist 400 m lang und 190 m breit. Sie ist teilweise bewaldet. Die östliche Eilean Buidhe liegt nur etwa 100 m abseits der Cowal-Küste. Sie ist mit einer Länge von 160 m bei einer Breite von 100 m die kleinste der Inseln. Ein historischer Dun auf der Insel wurde erstmals 1822 beschrieben und 1936 freigelegt. Die beinahe kreisrunde Anlage wurde von bis zu vier Meter mächtigen Mauern umfriedet, die ein Areal mit einem Durchmesser von etwa 19,5 m einschlossen. Das Mauerwerk ist heute bis zu einer Höhe von 1,5 m erhalten. (de)

The islands are located at grid reference NS017752. Individually the Islands are known by their Gaelic names. From the largest to the smallest they are Eilean Mòr (Large Island), Eilean Fraoich (Heather Island) and Eilean Buidhe (Yellow Island). Oddly only the smallest of these tiny islets, Eilean Buidhe, shows any sign of ever having been permanently inhabited having the remains of a vitrified fort on it. Eilean Mòr, huge in comparison, supports only a stunted woodland at its northern end. All water going traffic that travels through the kyles has to negotiate either the narrow sound that separates Eilean Buidhe from Eilean Mòr and Eilean Fraoich or pass south of the islands, via the Wood Farm buoy. The narrows, which are the principal route for commercial traffic, are marked by four light buoys, two on each side. A little to the west Eilean Dubh (Black Island) lies at the entrance to Loch Riddon and to the north Eilean Dearg lies within the loch. (en)
