Tussen 1938 en 1962 is het zand per jaar 32 m landwaarts gewaaid. Tegenwoordig bedraagt de afstand tussen het eiland en de kust van Duitsland ongeveer 6 km. Tijdens hoogwater-spring en stormvloed staat Blauort volledig onder water. Bij laagwater en een laag hoogwater is nog een deel van de zandplaat zichtbaar. (nl)

| - Blauort ist ein der deutschen Nordseeküste von Dithmarschen (nahe Büsum) vorgelagerter, unbewohnter Hochsand (Außensand), der etwa 1200 m in Nord-Süd-Richtung und 500 Meter in Ost-West-Richtung misst. Er ist umgeben von der Sandbank Blauortsand, die im Norden vom Priel Wesselburener Loch und im Süden von der Piep begrenzt ist. Der Blauort wandert wie alle unbefestigten Inseln und Hochsände an der Westküste Schleswig-Holsteins stetig ostwärts. Von 1938 bis 1962 bewegte sich der Sand pro Jahr etwa 32 Meter landwärts, zurzeit beträgt die Entfernung zur Küste rund sechs Kilometer. Blauort ragt über das mittlere Tidehochwasser (hier bei 1,83 m ü. NN) hinaus und wird nur bei Spring- oder Sturmfluten vollständig überspült. Es gibt keine Vegetation auf Blauort.Seit 1985 ist Blauort, das zu den wenigen weitgehend naturbelassenen Lebensräumen an der Küste zählt und von großer Bedeutung für Seevögel und Seehunde ist, Teil der Schutzzone 1 des Nationalparks Schleswig-Holsteinisches Wattenmeer. Blauort ist durch eine Bake, die Blauortbake, markiert.In den Sommermonaten werden geführte Wattwanderungen zum Blauortsand von Büsum und Wesselburen aus angeboten. The islet of Blauort is migrating steadily eastwards, like all sandy islands on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein. From 1938 to 1962, the sand moved towards the land at a rate of about 32 metres per year and, at present, it is about six miles from the coast. Blauort's highest point lies above the average high tide (which is about 1.83 m above sea level (NN) ) and is only completely submerged by spring tides or storm surges. There is no vegetation on Blauort. Blauort is one of the few, largely unspoilt habitats on the coast and of great importance for seabirds and common seals, Since 1985 it has been part of protection zone I in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. Blauort is marked by a daymark, the Blauortbake ("Blauort daymark").In the summer months, guided mudflat walks of the Blauortsand are offered which depart from Büsum and Wesselburen.
