Benchball is a team sport played in schools, used for developing ball skills and as a preparation for learning netball and basketball. There are several varieties of the game, but there are always two teams, each with a bench, and one dodgeball or large soft ball in play. A flat rectangular surface is needed, marked with side lines such as those of a badminton court. The size of the teams is variable, but must be the same for each side. Each of them has a goalkeeper who stands on the team’s bench, while the other players take up positions around their half of the court. The ball is thrown into the centre of the court, and a player catches it to gain possession. The aim of the game is to pass the ball to the goalkeeper and then that person goes on the bench until there are five people on th

  • Benchball is a team sport played in schools, used for developing ball skills and as a preparation for learning netball and basketball. The aim of the game is to pass the ball to the goalkeeper and then that person goes on the bench until there are five people on the bench, then a new round begins. If the ball is dropped or the other team gains possession, a new count begins. If the ball leaves the court, the team which was not the last to touch it has a throw-in from the side-line. Players can pass the ball to each other but are not allowed to move with the ball. After a goal, the players go back to their start positions and there is a new throw-in to the middle. Alternatively, the team which did not score the goal throws the ball in from behind the bench where the goal was scored. A row of cones can be used to mark out a strip four feet wide in front of each bench which the defenders are not allowed to enter. In this version of the sport, all team members standing on the bench are allowed to catch balls. In a version of the sport played in Canada, each team has six players, who must be of both sexes, at least two of each, and there are three dodgeballs for each team. One team player stands on a bench at the back of the other team’s side of the court. Players are not allowed to cross the center line in play. The object of the game is to throw the team’s ball in play to the team member on the bench; if this is caught on the bench, the thrower also goes onto the bench. When the whole team is on the bench, it has won one point. This continues for the length of the match, and the winning team is the one with the most points at the end. The game has been called a wet-weather game, as it is played indoors and can be used to replace outside games when rain stops play. At the University of Exeter, the game is played by students. The objects of the Bench Ball Society there include "Provide a frequent variety of socials from bowling to pub crawls and training/match sessions this year and attend the national Benchball Varsity". The University of Sheffield's Benchball Society plays and maintains its own set of rules which are used to compete in the National Benchball Varsity tournament. It is seen as a more casual sports society as the skill of the players isn't the main purpose of the activity. (en)
