And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks is a novel by Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs. It was written in 1945, a full decade before the two authors became famous as leading figures of the Beat Generation, and remained unpublished in complete form until 2008.

Burroughs (pod jménem William Lee) psal z pohledu postavy jménem Will Dennison, zatímco Kerouacova (pod jménem John Kerouac) postava se jmenovala Mike Ryko. Román pojednává o zabití , kterého ubodal k smrti Lucien Carr. Carr se k činu přiznal, nejprve Burroughsovi a později Kerouacovi, přičemž ani jeden z nich čin nenahlásil policii. Carr se nakonec přiznal i policii. Burroughs i Kerouac byli následně zatčeni kvůli nenahlášení. (cs)
