Er war Bischof der Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania und Professor am Union College. 1831 wurde Potter in die American Academy of Arts and Sciences gewählt, 1844 in die American Philosophical Society. Potter erhielt 1846 an der Harvard University einen Doctor of Divinity und am Union College einen LL. D., jeweils als Ehrendoktorat. (de) Alonzo Potter (6 de julio de 1800 - 4 de julio de 1865), obispo estadounidense de la Iglesia Protestante Episcopal. Nació en Beekman (ahora llamado La Granje), en el condado Dutchess, en Nueva York, el 6 de julio de 1800. Sus antepasados, ingleses de la sociedad Friends, se establecieron en Porstmouth, Rhode Island, entre el 1640 y el 1660.
