As Polygnotus flourished before the 90th Olympiad, Aglaophon probably lived around the 70th Olympiad, that is, around the late 6th or early 5th century BC. Quintilian praises his paintings, which were distinguished by the simplicity of their coloring, as worthy of admiration on other grounds besides their antiquity. (en)

De les seves obres es coneixen la pintura d'Olimpies o Pities com a genis que presidien els jocs olímpics i coronant a Alcibíades. I la pintura de Nemea presidint els jocs Nemeus. Er war Vater und Lehrer des berühmten Malers Polygnotos und des Aristophon. Von seinem Wirken ist nur sehr wenig sicheres überliefert, zumal es einen jüngeren Maler gleichen Namens, vermutlich der Enkel des Aglaophon, gab und die Zuweisung mit dem Namen verbundener Werke an die beiden Maler bisweilen nur unter Vorbehalt möglich ist. Nach Quintilian waren seine Gemälde wie die seines Sohnes Polygnot simplex color, also von einfacher Farbgebung. Sie waren dennoch nicht nur wegen ihres Alters sehenswert, sondern wurden trotz ihrer einfachen Farbgebung von manchen den vollkommeneren Werken späterer Künstler vorgezogen. Worauf sich dieses Urteil stützt, ist nicht zu erschließen. An Werken ist lediglich eine Nike, die er als erster Maler mit Flügeln versah, aus der schriftlichen Überlieferung bekannt. (de)

Στο άλλο έργο, η κυρίαρχη ομώνυμη θεότητα των Νεμέων κρατά τον Αλκιβιάδη στα γόνατά της. Ο Αλκιβιάδης δεν ήταν δυνατό να καταγάγει νίκες πολύ πριν την 91η Ολυμπιάδα (416 π.Χ.). Συνεπώς είναι πολύ πιθανόν ο συγκεκριμένος καλλιτέχνης να ήταν γιος του , δηλ. εγγονός του πρώτου Αγλαοφώντος. Ο Πλούταρχος επίσης αναφέρει τον Αριστοφώντα ως δημιουργό της εικόνας του Αλκιβιάδη με την Νεμέα, ενώ είναι πιθανόν να βοήθησε τον γιο του στη δημιουργία της. Σύμφωνα με μερικούς ερευνητές, ο δεύτερος Αγλαοφών ήταν ο πρώτος καλλιτέχνης που απεικόνισε τη θεά Νίκη με φτερά. (el)
