Aesica (with the modern name of Great Chesters) was a Roman fort, one and a half miles north of the small town of Haltwhistle in Northumberland, England. It was the ninth fort on Hadrian's Wall, between Vercovicium (Housesteads) to the east and Magnis (Carvoran) to the west. Its purpose was to guard the Caw Gap, where the Haltwhistle Burn crosses the Wall. The B6318 Military Road passes about half a mile to the south of the fort.

  • Aesica war ein römisches Kastell der Hilfstruppen im County Northumbria, im Nordwesten von England, Parish Greenhead, Ortsteil Haltwhistle. Es gehörte zu der aus insgesamt 16 Kastellen bestehenden Festungskette des Hadrianswalls (per lineam valli) und sicherte dessen mittleren Abschnitt. Im Gegensatz zu den meisten anderen Lagern entlang des Walls, stand Aesica zur Gänze südlich der Mauer, neben den Grundfesten des ursprünglichen Walls und eines Meilenkastells, die beim Bau des Kastells beseitigt worden waren. Das Lager wurde vermutlich von 128 bis 400 n. Chr. vom römischen Militär genutzt.

  • Aesica (Engels: Great Chesters) was een Romeins fort aan de Muur van Hadrianus. Het lag tussen de forten van Magnis (Carvoran) in het westen en Housesteads in het oosten. Het fort had een rechthoekig grondplan met afgerond hoeken en aan elke zijde een poort. In de tweede eeuw was hier de Cohors VI Nerviorum gelegerd en mogelijk ook een Cohors Raetorum. In de derde huisvestte het fort de Cohors II Asturum en Raetische speerdragers (Raeti Gaesati). Rond 400, kort voor de ontruiming van de muur, was de Cohors I Asturum er gelegerd.
