Abell 31 is an ancient planetary nebula in the constellation of Cancer. It is estimated to be about 2,000 light years away. Although it is one of the largest planetary nebulae in the sky, it is not very bright. The central star of the planetary nebula is a white dwarf with a spectral type of DAO.

Der südliche Teil des Nebels wird noch durch eine bogenförmige Schockzone umgeben, während die Grenzen des nördlichen Teils sehr verschwommen sind. Letzteres und die große Ausdehnung deuten auf das hohe Alter des planetarischen Nebels hin, da er sich bereits mit der interstellaren Materie zu vermischen und aufzulösen beginnt. (de)

Si individua con estrema difficoltà circa 2,5 gradi a SSE dell'ammasso aperto M67; nonostante le sue grandi dimensioni (una delle nebulose planetarie più estese della volta celeste) non è altrettanto luminosa, anzi la sua estensione è la causa della sua bassa luminosità: si tratta infatti di una nebulosa molto antica, i cui gas si sono espansi a tal punto da iniziare a disperdersi nel mezzo interstellare circostante. La parte meridionale della nube è circondata da un effetto bow shock, mentre la parte settentrionale ha dei limiti estremamente sfumati, segno che qua la dissoluzione è già in atto.
