| - A Sea Symphony is an hour-long work for soprano, baritone, chorus and large orchestra written by Ralph Vaughan Williams between 1903 and 1909. The first and longest of his nine symphonies, it was first performed at the Leeds Festival in 1910 with the composer conducting, and its maturity belies the relatively young age — thirty — when he began sketching it. Moreover it is one of the first symphonies in which a chorus is used throughout as an integral part of the texture and it helped set the stage for a new era of symphonic and choral music in Britain during the first half of the 20th century. La prima e più lunga sinfonia di Vaughan Williams, fu eseguita per la prima volta al Festival di Leeds nel 1910, con la direzione del compositore. La maturità della sinfonia smentisce la relativa giovinezza del compositore quando fu scritta (aveva 30 anni quando iniziò ad abbozzarla per la prima volta). - A Sea Symphony is de bijnaam van de 1e symfonie van Ralph Vaughan Williams. Rond 1900 verschenen allerlei composities over de zee, zoals La Mer van Claude Debussy en het eerdere werk met dezelfde titel van Paul Gilson en van Frank Bridge. Tegelijk groeide de belangstelling naar het werk van dichters zoals de Amerikaan Walt Whitman. Ralph Vaughan Williams combineerde beide zaken. In 1903 begon hij aan dit werk en was klaar in 1909, na veel wikken en wegen of composities gemaakt in die jaren, wel in het werk pasten. Ondertussen nam hij les bij Maurice Ravel.
