In 1990, Peet received a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Canterbury and in 1994 a doctorate in physics from Stanford University. From 1994 to 1997 they worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton University and from 1997 to 2000 as a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Theoretical Physics, University of California, Santa Barbara. Since 2000, Peet teaches and conducts research as a full professor at the University of Toronto. Peet is an affiliate of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. Peet is non-binary and is a New Zealand citizen with a passport using an unspecified gender.
