Diese dauerte vier Jahre bis Oktober 2003. Im Nationalrat kam es zu einem Erdrutschsieg der Schweizerischen Volkspartei. Die SVP gewann 15 Sitze und konnte besonders in jenen Kantonen zulegen, in denen sie erst während der 1990er-Jahre gegründet wurde (hauptsächlich mittlere und kleine Kantone der Deutschschweiz).
