The 1977 European Cup was the 6th edition of the European Cup of athletics. It was the first edition to introduce "A" and "B" Finals. The "A" Finals were held in Helsinki, Finland. The first two teams in those qualified for the inaugural IAAF World Cup.

L'Allemagne de l'Est s'impose dans les deux épreuves masculine et féminine. La compétition est marquée par quatre cas de dopage, dont trois concernent l'équipe masculine finlandaise, ce qui oblige à modifier le classement initial. Deux records du monde féminins sont établis durant cette compétition, celui du 400 m haies par l'Est-allemande Karin Rossley en 55 s 63, et celui du saut en hauteur par sa compatriote Rosemarie Ackermann avec 1,97 m. На старт вышли по 8 сильнейших сборных континента среди мужчин и женщин, отобравшиеся ранее по итогам трёх полуфиналов. На протяжении двух дней участники боролись за командные очки в 20 мужских и 15 женских легкоатлетических дисциплинах. Финал B состоялся 6—7 августа в шведском Гётеборге (мужчины) и чехословацком Тршинеце (женщины). На турнире проходил отбор на Кубок мира 1977 года в Дюссельдорфе.
