Lope de Barrientos (1382–1469), sometimes called Obispo Barrientos ("Bishop Barrientos"), was a powerful clergyman and statesman of the Crown of Castile during the 15th century, although his prominence and the influence he wielded during his lifetime is not a subject of common study in Spanish history. From relatively humble beginnings in Medina del Campo, where he studied grammar, he took advantage of a secular custom of Castilian monarchs to selectively promote lower class court nobility to the service of Ferdinand I of Aragon—a privilege normally reserved for those of high birth.

Oriundo di Medina del Campo, studiò grammatica, sfruttò l'abitudine secolare dei monarchi castigliani d'impiegare nobili di seconda categoria nella corte (allontanando così dal potere l'alta nobiltà) per entrare al servizio di Fernando di Antequera. Fu frate dominicano e professore dell'Università di Salamanca, confessore reale di Giovanni II di Castiglia, vescovo in tre città: Ávila, Segovia e Conca, inquisitore, uomo affidabile dei re Giovanni II e Enrique IV di Castiglia e cancelliere maggiore di Castiglia. D'orígens humils, va estudiar gramàtica i va aprofitar el costum dels monarques castellans de servir-se de nobles de segona línia, enfront de l'alta noblesa per entrar al servei de l'infant Ferran, que més endavant esdevindria monarca de la Corona d'Aragó. Després, gràcies a la seva intel·ligència i la conjuntura política, va ascendir socialment assolint diversos càrrecs: entrà a l'orde dels dominics, fou catedràtic de la Universitat de Salamanca, confessor del rei Joan II de Castella i bisbe successivament de Segòvia, Àvila, però sobretot de . Progresó desde fraile dominico a catedrático de la Universidad de Salamanca, confesor real de Juan II de Castilla, obispo en tres ciudades sucesivas: Ávila, Segovia y Cuenca, inquisidor, hombre de confianza de los reyes Juan II y Enrique IV de Castilla y canciller mayor de Castilla.
