- A Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) is an internationally agreed upon reference point on a stratigraphic section which defines the lower boundary of a stage on the geologic time scale. The effort to define GSSPs is conducted by the International Commission on Stratigraphy, a part of the International Union of Geological Sciences. Most, but not all, GSSPs are based on paleontological changes. Hence GSSPs are usually described in terms of transitions between different faunal stages, though far more faunal stages have been described than GSSPs. The GSSP definition effort commenced in 1977. As of 2022, 77 of the 101 stages that need a GSSP have a ratified GSSP. (en)

- Een golden spike (Engels voor gouden spijker) of Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (afgekort GSSP) is een locatie waar de basis van gesteente uit een bepaald geologisch tijdperk duidelijk zichtbaar is, normaal gesproken in de vorm van een geologische ontsluiting. Wetenschappers hebben afgesproken deze plek te gebruiken als internationale definitie. Een golden spike is daarom een typelocatie; en de ontsluiting is het stratotype van een grens tussen twee chronostratigrafische eenheden. Tijdperken uit de geochronologie worden gedefinieerd door datering van de GSSP's. Met de GSSP van een bepaalde chronostratigrafische eenheid wordt altijd de basis bedoeld, de top van een eenheid is de GSSP van de erop liggende eenheid. (nl)

En GSSP kan bara ratificeras av arbetsgrupper inom den Internationella kommissionen för stratigrafi ICS (International Commission on Stratigraphy). Serveixen com a secció de referència per a una frontera particular en l'escala de temps geològics. Els EGL s'estableixen per Comissió Internacional d'Estratigrafia (ICS) i la (UISG) n'elabora les convencions internacionals. En els mapes estratigràfics, l'EGL sovint s'indica amb el símbol GSSP. - Global Stratotype Section and Point (auch Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point, wörtlich „Profil und Punkt des weltweiten Grenz-Stratotypus“, kurz GSSP) ist die Bezeichnung für einen geologischen Aufschluss mit marinen Sedimentgesteinen, der als Referenz (Typlokalität) für die Grenze einer chronostratigraphischen Einheit dient. Das geologische Profil des Aufschlusses wird bis ins Detail geologisch untersucht und beschrieben.
