It forms a roughly triangular plateau bounded by the River Wye to the west and northwest, Herefordshire to the north, the River Severn to the south, and the City of Gloucester to the east. Traditionally the main sources of work have been forestry – including charcoal production – iron working and coal mining. Archaeological studies have dated the earliest use of coal to Roman times for domestic heating and industrial processes such as the preparation of iron ore. (en)
- (Royal) Forest of Dean ist ein historisches Waldgebiet mit einer Ausdehnung von ca. 120 km² auf einer Berggruppe in der Grafschaft Gloucestershire im Westen von England. Er befindet sich im Dreieck zwischen den Städten Gloucester, Monmouth und Chepstow nördlich des Flusses Severn und östlich des River Wye. An seinem Rand befinden sich die beiden kleinen Städtchen im Westen und im Osten. Der Forst hat eine lange Geschichte. Eine Besiedlung konnte schon für vorgeschichtliche Zeit nachgewiesen werden, ebenso wie unter der römischen Besetzung Britanniens (Ruinen in Lydney Park). Unter den Angelsachsen wurde das Gebiet zu einem königlichen Jagdrevier, was es über Jahrhunderte blieb. Der Wald lieferte zudem (Eichen-)Holz für den englischen Schiffbau und Holzkohle. Dá nome ao distrito Floresta de Dean. Coleford é a principal cidade e centro administrativo. Cinderford e Lydney também são grandes centros.
