На рабочем позитиве совмещаются изображение и исходная синхронная фонограмма, которая в готовом фильме заменяется фонограммой перезаписи, содержащей музыку и шумовые эффекты. Кроме готового изображения он может содержать вклеенные на местах будущих спецэффектов и монтажных переходов пустые ракорды из засвеченной киноплёнки. Składa się z wybranych ujęć pochodzących z tzw. dailies, czyli materiału filmowego nakręconego podczas poszczególnych dni zdjęciowych. Kopia robocza jest stopniowo przycinana od postaci rough cut (próbnego montażu) do wersji fine cut (ostatecznej wersji montażowej) i służy następnie za wzorzec dla dystrybuowanych w kinach kopii eksploatacyjnych. Com a versió no finalitzada, pot contenir so que haurà de tornar-se a registrar, que després seran reemplaçats, seqüències amb tests que permetin la inserció d'imatges animades i d'efectes especials digitals, etc. Els workprints són de vegades copiats i posats a disposició i·llegalment a Internet, fins i tot mesos abans de l'estrena oficial del film. Un workprint de Hulk va ser difós dues setmanes abans la seva estrena al cinema mentre que una còpia de treball de Star Wars, episodi III: La Revenja de les Sith va estar disponible a Internet hores després de la sortida del film. Dabei gibt es meist einen Bildstreifen und drei Tonstreifen für Dialog, Geräusche und Musik. Die Arbeitskopie ist voll von Markierungen und Spleißen. Um vorführbare Streifen zu erhalten, werden bei Großproduktionen so genannte Abklatsche, das sind schwarzweiße Duplikate auf Direktumkehrfilm, von der Arbeitskopie erstellt. Solcher Film bringt zwar unzureichenden Kontrast mit sich, kann aber mit gewöhnlichem Positiventwickler bearbeitet werden, wodurch ein Abklatsch entsprechend kostengünstig ist. Die mit der Musik und ihrer Synchronisierung zum Bild beschäftigten Techniker sowie Trickspezialisten für aufwändige Szenen erhalten einen Abklatsch. Heute sind Arbeitskopien in der Regel digitale Dateien. Arbeitskopien waren gelegentlich Quellen für illegale Vorabveröffentlichungen von Filmen im Internet, beispielsweise in Tauschbörsen. Während das Filmmaterial hochwertig ist, können Effekte und Nachbearbeitungen fehlen, häufig ist noch die Filmlaufzeit im Bild eingeblendet. Aufsehen erregte 2005 die Veröffentlichung einer Arbeitskopie des Films Star Wars: Episode III – Die Rache der Sith, der zum Kinostart des Films im Usenet veröffentlicht wurde. 2009 wurde der Film X-Men Origins: Wolverine etwa vier Wochen vor Kinostart aus den Filmstudios gestohlen. For most of the first century of filmmaking, workprints were done using second-generation prints from the original camera negatives. After the editor and director approved of the final edit of the workprint, the same edits were made to the negative. With the conversion to digital editing, workprints are now generally created on a non-linear editing system using telecined footage from the original film or video sources (in contrast to a pirate "telecine", which is made with a much higher-generation film print). Occasionally, early digital workprints of films have been bootlegged and made available on the Internet. They sometimes appear months in advance of an official release. There are also director's cut versions of films that are only available on bootleg, such as the workprint version of Richard Williams' The Thief and the Cobbler. Although movie studios generally do not make full-length workprints readily available to the public, there are exceptions. Examples include the "Work-In-Progress" version of Beauty and the Beast, and the Denver/Dallas pre-release version of Blade Runner. Deleted scenes or bonus footage included on DVD releases are sometimes left in workprint format as well, e.g. the Scrubs DVD extras.
