USS Charrette (DD-581) was a Fletcher-class destroyer of the United States Navy, named for Lieutenant George Charrette (1867–1938), who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism during the Spanish–American War. Entering service during World War II, she spent her career in the Pacific theatre. Placed in reserve following the war, Charette was transferred to the Kingdom of Greece in 1959 and renamed Velos (D16), remaining in service till 1991 before being preserved as a museum ship at Palaio Faliro, Athens.

Κυβερνήτης του πλοίου ήταν ο Νικόλαος Παππάς (1929 - 2013) ο οποίος μαζί με έξι αξιωματικούς και εικοσιπέντε υπαξιωματικούς ζήτησαν πολιτικό άσυλο και παρέμειναν εκεί ως πολιτικοί εξόριστοι. Η κίνηση αυτή επέφερε πλήγμα στην Χούντα των Συνταγματαρχών. Όταν εισέβαλαν οι Τούρκοι στην Κύπρο το αντιτορπιλικό Βέλος έσπευσε να βοηθήσει στην άμυνα του νησιού. Σήμερα λειτουργεί ως Μουσείο Αντιδικτατορικού Αγώνα αγκυροβολημένο στην παραλία της Θεσσαλονίκης. (el) Lo USS Charrette (hull classification symbol DD-581) fu un cacciatorpediniere della United States Navy, entrato in servizio nel 1943 e appartenente alla classe Fletcher. Attivo durante la seconda guerra mondiale, il cacciatorpediniere operò intensamente nel teatro dell'oceano Pacifico contro i giapponesi, servendo principalmente come unità di scorta dei gruppi di portaerei statunitensi e come unità d'appoggio nelle operazioni anfibie; in questa veste l'unità fu presente a numerose importanti azioni, come la battaglia di Tarawa, la campagna delle isole Marianne e Palau, la battaglia del Mare delle Filippine e la battaglia del Golfo di Leyte. Terminato il conflitto, il Charrette fu radiato dal servizio attivo nel marzo 1946 e posto in riserva. (it)
