Er trug astronomische und mathematische Artikel zur 7. Auflage der Encyclopedia Britannica bei, sein Artikel Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie wurde auch separat gedruckt. En 1812 ingresó en la Universidad de Edimburgo, donde destacó especialmente en matemáticas.
