De band creëerde vanaf de eerste albums een eigen, herkenbaar ambientgeluid. De muziek van Swell is voorzien van invloeden uit punk, psychedelica, folk en filmscores. Daardoor moeilijk te catalogeren en/of te vergelijken met anderen. De band bracht tot dusver acht albums uit, naast twee compilatie-albums, een aantal singles, e.p.’s en mini-albums.
