- 社会福祉事業（しゃかいふくしじぎょう）とは、社会福祉法第2条を根拠とする福祉事業のことである。第1種社会福祉事業と第2種社会福祉事業がある。
* 社会福祉事業の運営主体は国（日本政府）・地方公共団体（都道府県および市町村）・社会福祉法人ならびにそれに類するとされる機関（日本赤十字社など、社会福祉法人に類さずとも国・地方公共団体によってそれに準ずると認められた団体）が行う。ただし、社会福祉法人以外の団体が社会福祉事業を行う場合には所定の届出が必要。
