El samburupitec visqué a Kenya al Miocè mitjà-tardà. S. kiptalami és l'única espècie del gènere Samburupithecus. És coneguda únicament a partir d'un fragment de mandíbula que data de fa 9,5 milions d'anys i fou descobert el 1997 per Hidemi Ishida i Martin Pickford. És possible que es tracti d'un avantpassat comú dels goril·les, ximpanzés i humans. És un parent proper del cororapitec i el nakalipitec. (ca)

The one species in this genus, Samburupithecus kiptalami, is known only from a maxilla fragment dated to 9.5 million years ago discovered in 1982 and formally described by . The type specimen KNM-SH 8531 was discovered by the Joint Japan-Kenya Expedition at the SH22 fossil site in the Samburu District, a locality where several other researchers found no ape fossils. (en)
