Robert Nathaniel Dett (October 11, 1882 – October 2, 1943), often known as R. Nathaniel Dett and Nathaniel Dett, was a Black Canadian-American composer, organist, pianist, choral director, and music professor. Born and raised in Canada until the age of 11, he moved to the United States with his family and had most of his professional education and career there. During his lifetime he was a leading Black composer, known for his use of African-American folk songs and spirituals as the basis for choral and piano compositions in the 19th century Romantic style of Classical music.

Dett studierte von 1903 bis 1908 am Oberlin Conservatory of Music, wo er als erster Afroamerikaner den Grad eines Bachelor of Music erreichte. Danach unterrichtete er am Lane College in Jackson/Tennessee. Zwischen 1913 und 1932 wirkte er in Hampton/Virginia, wo er die School of Music, die Hampton Choral Union, die Musical Arts Society und den Hampton Institute Choir gründete. Von 1920 bis 1921 studierte er bei Arthur Foote an der Harvard University, 1929 bei Nadia Boulanger in Paris und danach an der Eastman School of Music.
