Rhizocyon ("root dog") is an early member of the subfamily Borophaginae, an extinct subgroup of canids that were endemic to western North America during the Oligocene epoch, living from ~31—24.5 Ma., existing for approximately 6.5 million years.

| - Rhizocyon es un género extinto de mamífero carnívoro perteneciente a la subfamilia Borophaginae. El género fue habitó al occidente de América del Norte durante el Oligoceno, viviendo desde hace 33,3—20,6 millones de años, existiendo durante aproximadamente 12,7 millones de años. Rhizocyon fue similar a la especie contemporánea, Archaeocyon leptodus, que habitó las grandes llanuras, pero tenían sutiles diferencias en la estructura del cráneo y dentadura, indicando que Rhizocyon pudo estar relacionado con los ancestros de los borofagínidos. Solo se conoce una especie, R. oregonensis; sus fósiles se han hallado en el estado de Oregón, Estados Unidos. (es)

Rhizocyon was similar to a contemporary species, Archaeocyon leptodus, from the Great Plains, but it shows a few subtle differences in the structure of the skull and dentition that indicate that Rhizocyon may be close to the ancestry of later borophagines. Only a single species, R. oregonensis, is known and all fossils come from the John Day Formation in Oregon. (en)
