Rauschpfeife is a commonly used term for a specific type of capped conical reed musical instrument of the woodwind family, used in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. In common with the crumhorn and cornamuse, it is a wooden double-reed instrument with the reed enclosed in a windcap. The player blows into a slot in the top of the windcap to produce the sound.

| - Vzdušnicová šalmaj (jinak též šrajfajf, schreierpfeife, schreyerpfeife, schreiarien) je dřevěný dechový nástroj s přímým kónickým vývrtem a dvojitým plátkem (strojkem), který je uložen ve vzdušnici podobně jako je tomu u dud. Celosvětově zavedený název rauschpfeife je podle posledních organologických poznatků pro tento nástroj nesprávný - jméno rauschpfeife označovalo v minulosti obecně skupinu dechových nástrojů, především šalmají, ovšem jak vzdušnicových, tak bez vzdušnice. Zvuk nástroje je neobyčejně silný. Hráč vydechuje do štěrbiny vzdušnice, zvýšený tlak ve vzdušnici rozechvěje strojek a ten potom vytváří zvuk. Díky kónickému vývrtu lze nástroj přefukovat do oktávy, jeho rozsah je přibližně 1 a 1/2 oktávy. Nástroj je opatřen sedmi prstovými dírkami a jednou palcovou. Byl vyráběn pravděpodobně jako rodina šesti velikostí od pastýřské vzdušnicové šalmaje až po velkobasovou. Dobu vzniku vzdušnicové šalmaje přesně neznáme, v pramenech se její jméno objevuje poprvé v roce 1523, největší obliby dosáhla pravděpodobně v renesanci. Z některých vyobrazení ze 16. století lze usuzovat, že byla hojně využívána při venkovních produkcích - liturgických průvodech, královských průvodech, pravděpodobně byla nasazována ve větších souborech i jako zastrašovací nástroj při válečných taženích. U nás se dochovalo pět vzdušnicových šalmají z instrumentáře Rožmberské kapely. Byly nalezeny v semináři jindřichohradeckého gymnázia, v inventáři jsou uvedeny jako „šrajfajfy“. Dnes jsou tyto vzácné nástroje uloženy ve sbírce Českého muzea hudby. (cs)

Die Rauschpfeife unterscheidet sich von der Renaissanceschalmei durch die Windkapsel, die stärker konische Bohrung und die dadurch bedingte kürzere Baulänge. Das Instrument wird in c/f-Stimmung in den Stimmlagen Sopranino, Sopran, Alt und Tenor gebaut. Die Bassrauschpfeife ist bereits sehr unhandlich und benötigt sehr viel Luft. Die Blütezeit der Rauschpfeife ist wie bei anderen Instrumenten ihrer Familie die Renaissance. Durch die Wiederentdeckung alter Musik ist auch die Rauschpfeife zu neuer Beliebtheit gekommen. Die meisten heute gebauten Rauschpfeifen orientieren sich technisch und optisch an den Spielpfeifen der Mittelalterszene und sind in offener deutscher Blockflötengriffweise gebaut. Der Tonumfang beträgt zumeist eine None. Ferner sind die neueren Rauschpfeifen häufig nur halb so groß wie die Instrumente aus den 1970er Jahren, die sich häufig an den erhaltenen Instrumenten der sogenannten Naumburger Sammlung orientierten. Die Rauschpfeifen der Naumburger Sammlung haben auf knapp der Hälfte des Korpus ein rückseitig angebrachtes Austrittsloch für den Schall, das die musikalische Wirksamkeit der unteren Korpushälfte außer Kraft setzt.
