Sometimes called the bearded toadheads but better known by their scientific name of Phrynops this genus of turtles has often been a bit of a dumping ground for the short-necked South American turtles of the family Chelidae. The genus is widely distributed in South America found in the Orinoco to Amazon and São Francisco to Paraná and adjacent river basins of Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and northeastern Argentina (Iverson, 1992).

Tienen una cabeza característica con rostro hundido, en lo alto grandes ojos salientes y boca amplia. No pueden retraer la cabeza directamente dentro del caparazón sino que la inclinan al lado. En la especie P. zuliae la gran cabeza puede llegar a medir hasta 10 cm de ancho. Los dedos de las extremidades son completamente palmeados y en cada una cinco garras. (es)

- Paddenkopschildpadden (Phrynops) zijn een geslacht van schildpadden uit de familie slangenhalsschildpadden (Chelidae). De groep werd voor het eerst wetenschappelijk beschreven door Johann Georg Wagler in 1830. Er zijn vier soorten die leven in Zuid-Amerika, alle soorten komen onder andere voor in Brazilië, ze delen grote stukken van het verspreidingsgebied met de vier Acanthochelys-soorten. . De soorten hebben een kenmerkende, afgeplatte kop en grote, uitpuilende ogen die wat meer aan de bovenzijde van de kop staan en een brede bek, waardoor de kop met enige fantasie lijkt op de kop van padden, wat de Nederlandstalige naam verklaart. Zoals alle slangenhalsschildpadden kan de nek niet worden teruggetrokken in het schild en bij de Phrynops-soorten is de nek duidelijk verlengd, maar niet heel lang zoals andere geslachten uit de familie.
