Philip Tagg (born 1944 in Oundle, Northamptonshire, UK) is a British musicologist, writer and educator. He is co-founder of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM) and author of several influential books on popular music and music semiotics.

Dapprima insegnante dal 1966 di inglese presso scuole superiori svedesi, è diventato poi Professore di Armonia, Improvvisazione, e Teoria musicale presso l'Università di Göteborg, dove poi ha assunto la cattedra di Musicologia fino al 1985. È quindi stato ricercatore di Musicologia presso il Consiglio Svedese delle Ricerche nelle Scienze umane e Sociali dal 1985 al 1991. Infine è stato Lettore in Musica all'Università di Liverpool dal 1993 al 2002, e professore di Musicologia all'Università di Montréal dal 2002 al 2009. (it)
