| - Der Phaeton war seit der Erfindung des Automobils eine weit verbreitete Karosseriebauform. Der Name „Phaeton“, der von einer Gestalt der griechischen Sagenwelt stammt (→ Phaethon), ging von der Kutsche auf die ersten Automobile oder „Motorkutschen“ über. Gottlieb Daimlers erster Motorwagen 1886 war ein motorisierter Phaeton Americaine, der vom Stuttgarter Kutschenbauer Wimpff & Sohn zugeliefert wurde. Automobile mit Phaeton-Karosserien gehörten als offene Zwei- oder als Viersitzer zur Angebotspalette nahezu aller Hersteller. Der Boom der Automobile in Phaeton-Form erreichte um 1910 seinen Höhepunkt. (de)

XX wieku był synonimem amerykańskich nazw convertible sedan i convertible phaéton. Dla pojazdów z czterema siedzeniami stosowano określenie double phaeton. Od późniejszych rozpowszechnionych nadwozi typu kabriolet, faeton różnił się tylko lekką ochroną pasażerów przed wpływami atmosfery, bez bocznych okien; czasem, zwłaszcza w starszych konstrukcjach, z minimalnymi tylko ściankami bocznymi i bez przedniej szyby.
