Related species of international importance include Sardinops caeruleus (USA), (Japan), and Sardina pilchardus (Spain). Its geographical distribution extends from the Gulf of Guayaquil (Ecuador) up to Talcahuano (Chile). The most important location of the fish in Peru is Paita, , Santa Rosa, and Chimbote.
