Sie wurde unter diesem Namen 1884 ins Leben gerufen, nachdem es schon seit 1883 acht Ausgaben eines Journals gegeben hatte, das Bulletin of the Nutall Ornithological Club hieß und als dessen Nachfolger The Auk sich verstand. Maßgeblich zur Gründung beigetragen hat Joel Asaph Allen, der auch bis 1912 ihr Herausgeber war. Do 2020 nosiło nazwę „The Auk”; jednocześnie zmieniono też nazwę siostrzanego czasopisma „The Condor” na „Ornithological Applications”. Wcześniej „The Auk” wydawany był przez Amerykańską Unię Ornitologiczną (American Ornithologists’ Union, AOU), która w 2016 połączyła się z (wydającym „The Condor”), tworząc American Ornithological Society. Het is het officiële tijdschrift van de American Ornithologists' Union en het wordt uitgegeven door de University of California Press. The Auk bevat artikelen over wetenschappelijke studies gedaan naar de anatomie, het gedrag en de verspreiding van vogels. Het blad is genoemd naar de reuzenalk, het symbool van de AUO. Het blad heeft in totaal 16 hoofdredacteurs gehad. Sinds 2010 is Michael Murphy van de hoofdredacteur. (nl)
