The merkhet or merjet (Ancient Egyptian: mrḫt, 'instrument of knowing') was an ancient surveying and timekeeping instrument. It involved the use of a bar with a plumb line, attached to a wooden handle. It was used to track the alignment of certain stars called decans or "baktiu" in the Ancient Egyptian. When visible, the stars could be used to measure the time at night. There were 10 stars for the 10 hours of the night; the day had a total of 24 hours including 12 hours for the day, 1 hour for sunset, and 1 hour for sunrise. Merkhets were used to replace sundials, which were useless during the dark.

Se trata de una plomada con un mango de madera, y servía para realizar un seguimiento de la alineación de las estrellas con el fin de conocer la hora nocturna, siempre que las estrellas pudieran verse. Per conoscere le ore della notte due o più osservatori stavano seduti ad una giusta distanza l'uno di fronte all'altro, secondo l'asse Nord-Sud, tenendo lo strumento nelle mani. La nervatura della palma serviva come mirino con il quale si traguardavano le stelle che culminavano attraverso il filo a piombo della squadra e riferendosi alla sagoma dell'osservatore che volgeva le spalle a sud; un aiutante leggeva l'ora secondo la posizione che la stella aveva sulla tavola stellare. Questo oggetto, secondo alcune fonti, risale addirittura al 2600 a.C. Molto probabilmente grazie a questo strumento era possibile, nella costruzione delle piramidi, raggiungere un grado di precisione di allineamento con i punti cardinali altissimo. (it)
