Ludwig II: Longing for Paradise (Ludwig II: Sensucht nach dem Paradies) is a German musical in five acts with music by Franz Hummel and book and lyrics by Stephan Barbarino and Heinz Hauser. The musical was presented at the lavish Festspielhaus Füssen, which was built for it at the edge of the lake below Neuschwanstein Castle. The musical was directed by Barbarino. The story concerns Bavaria's "Mad King" Ludwig II of Bavaria, who came to power in 1864 at the age of 18, lost a war against Prussia and spent his kingdom's fortune and sovereignty, and accumulated debts, to build extravagant castles and palaces and to sponsor Richard Wagner and other artists. Ludwig was declared insane and deposed in 1886, at the age of 41. He died the next day under suspicious circumstances.

April 2000 als wichtigster Teil des Themenparks Ludwig II., im eigens für dieses Werk gebaute Musical Theater Neuschwanstein in Füssen uraufgeführt. Die Architektur stammt von Josephine Barbarino. Das Bühnenbild für die mit eigenem Bühnensee sehr aufwändige Erstproduktion am Originalschauplatz gegenüber Schloss Neuschwanstein stammt vom Bühnenbildner , die Kostüme hat der Designer entworfen. Bis zu seiner vorläufig letzten – nach 1506 – Vorstellungen am 31. Dezember 2003 hatte das Musical über 1,5 Millionen Besucher. Das Musical wurde für das Deutsche Theater in München von Barbarino neu inszeniert. Die Premiere fand am 4. August 2005 statt; die Spielzeit dauerte bis Oktober 2005. Eine wesentliche Änderung der Neuinszenierung war die Einbindung von 3-D-Effekten, zu deren Betrachtung die Besucher entsprechende Brillen erhielten. Im mittlerweile in Festspielhaus Neuschwanstein umbenannten Musical-Theater in Füssen wurde von 2005 bis 2007 ein anderes Musical namens Ludwig ² gespielt. Der Spielbetrieb wurde zum 1. März 2007 eingestellt, 2016 jedoch wiederaufgenommen. Heute wird das Theater für Gastspiele aller Art genutzt, der König Ludwig II. Bezug ist auf das Stück "Ludwig 2 – Der König kehrt zurück" auf einige Wochen im Jahr reduziert. 2019 entstand eine überarbeitete Fassung von "Ludwig II. – Sehnsucht nach dem Paradies" für das Stadttheater Regensburg, die im Dezember 2019 dort erstmals in der Regie von Sam Brown sehr erfolgreich wiederaufgeführt wurde.
