Li naskiĝis en Londono kaj studis ĉe Christ's College (Kembriĝo) (kie li diplomiĝis en 1521), , Universitato de Oksfordo, kaj Parizo, kie li renkontis multajn eminentajn klerulojn, inter kiuj veŝajne Erasmon.
