Once a vital cargo transportation hub, the canal has seen decreasing use since the mid-20th century, parallel with the decline of domestic waterborne shipping. It continues to be used for occasional movement of goods and daily navigation of small boats, tugs and barges.

Der Name geht auf einen lokalen Indianerhäuptling (Gouwane) zurück. Der Kanal mündet als Gowanus Bay in die Upper New York Bay, also in den zentralen Teil des Hafengebiets. Nach ihm benannt sind ein Stadtviertel und der Gowanus Expressway. Als Creek war er Zentrum eines ausgedehnten Marschengebiets. Heute befindet sich hier eine der vier großen New Yorker Kläranlagen.
