"Gernikako Arbola" is the title of a song in bertso form presented both in Madrid (1853) and by the shrine of Saint Anthony at Urkiola (1854) by the Basque bard José María Iparraguirre (Spanish spelling Iparraguirre), celebrating the Tree of Gernika and the Basque liberties. The song is an unofficial anthem of the Basques, besides the "Eusko Abendaren Ereserkia", a largely instrumental version used for official purposes in the Basque Autonomous Community. In 2007, the General Assembly of Biscay declared it the district's official anthem.

Son renom est tel que Tirso de Molina y fait allusion et que Jean-Jacques Rousseau en fait le symbole des libertés basques. » C'est l'hymne non officiel des Basques, à côté de l'hymne national officiel qu'est l'Euzko Abendaren Ereserkia. On l'appelle aussi la Marseillaise des Basques. Pendant plus d'un siècle il a été l'hymne de tous les Basques, même s'il a été écarté par le Parlement de la Communauté autonome basque, partie certes importante de l'ensemble du Pays basque. (fr)
