German submarine U-172 was a Type IXC U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. She was first assigned to the 4th U-boat Flotilla for training and on 1 May 1942 was reassigned to the 10th flotilla, an operational long-range organization.

O Submarino foi afundado no dia 13 de Dezembro de 1943 após combater durante 27 horas contra as forças aliadas a oeste das Ilhas Canárias, sendo afundado por cargas de profundidade e por torpedos de aeronaves Wildcat e Avenger do navio de guerra norte americano e por cerca de 200 cargas de profundidade lançados dos contratorpedeiros norte-americanos , , e pelo .
