While Spanish is the first official language of Puerto Rico, English is the second official language. Spanish has been an official language in Puerto Rico since it was first colonized by Spain in the 15th century. English was first introduced on the island when the United States had acquired Puerto Rico as a U.S. territory after the Spanish–American War and the Treaty of Paris in 1898 but was not declared as an official language alongside Spanish until 1902. Its status as an official language was originally removed in 1991, but was later reintroduced again as the second official language again in 1993.
