The Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory (EChO) was a proposed space telescope as part of the Cosmic Vision roadmap of the European Space Agency, and competed with four other missions for the M3 slot in the programme. On 19 February 2014 the PLATO mission was selected in place of the other candidates in the programme, including EChO.

Il s'agit d'un télescope spatial, placé au point de Lagrange L2 pour observer les exoplanètes. Le projet fait partie des quatre projets pré-sélectionnés en février 2011 pour la future mission européenne M3 de classe moyenne du programme Cosmic Vision. EChO era in competizione con altre quattro missioni di classe M (media) e quando venne il momento di effettuare la scelta finale, a febbraio 2014, fu scelta la missione PLATO a scapito delle altre.
