Designed as a replacement for the World War II–era propeller-driven P-61 Black Widow night/interceptor aircraft, the XF-87 lost in government procurement competition to the Northrop F-89 Scorpion. - De Curtiss-Wright F-87 Blackhawk was een Amerikaans straalgevechtsvliegtuig voor alle weersomstandigheden, kort na de Tweede Wereldoorlog ontworpen en bedoeld om de Northrop P-61 Black Widow te vervangen in de USAF. Het toestel concurreerde met de Northrop F-89 Scorpion. De USAF koos voor de Scorpion en van de Blackhawk werden enkel twee prototypes gebouwd, aangeduid als XF-87. Po wybudowaniu dwóch prototypów cały program został anulowany, a zadania, jakie miał pełnić Blackhawk, powierzono maszynie Northrop F-89 Scorpion.
