Der Spieler mit den meisten veröffentlichten Partien (1709) ist Viktor Kortschnoi. Die Sweschnikow-Variante ist mit 1498 Partien die meistvertretene Eröffnungsvariante. Längste abgedruckte Partie ist John van der Wiel gegen John Fedorowicz, Graz 1981, die nach 143 Zügen mit einem Remis endete. Der Schachinformator war über Jahrzehnte das wichtigste Nachschlagewerk über die Entwicklung der Schachtheorie und gehörte zum Handwerkzeug jedes ernsthaften Schachspielers. Mittlerweile sind Schachdatenbanken, zum Beispiel ChessBase, eine große Konkurrenz. Auch der Informator erscheint mittlerweile parallel in elektronischer Form. Garri Kasparow würdigte den Schachinformator mit den Worten: „Das Erscheinen des Schachinformators Mitte der Sechziger Jahre kündigte eine Revolution in der Art an, wie sich Schachspieler auf ihre Gegner vorbereiten. A board of leading players selects the best games of each issue, and these are republished in the next issue often with more extensive annotations. Each issue since Chess Informant 5 has included a combinations section with problems from recent play. A similar endings section has also become a standard feature. For two decades prior to the emergence of computer databases, Chess Informant publications were a leading source of games and analysis for serious chess players. The publication routinely appears in the bibliography of texts on specific chess openings and other chess texts. Former world champion Garry Kasparov asserted, "We are all children of Informant" and then explained that his own development as a chess player corresponded with the ascent of Chess Informant's popularity. The Chess Informant system of codes for the classification of chess openings, and its system of symbols have set the international standard for organizing chess information and communicating this information across language barriers. On April 1, 2008, Chess Informant issued its one-hundredth issue. Per circa trent'anni, fino all'avvento dei database di partite su computer, rappresentò la principale fonte di informazioni per gli scacchisti di tutto il mondo sulle partite e sui tornei giocati a livello internazionale. Anche oggigiorno comunque l'Informatore, come viene comunemente chiamato, continua ad essere una pubblicazione molto popolare tra gli scacchisti. Ogni numero dell'Informatore Scacchistico contiene diverse centinaia di partite, molte commentate estesamente dagli stessi giocatori o da altri maestri o grandi maestri. Le posizioni più interessanti sono illustrate con diagrammi. Al termine del volume è presente un indice dettagliato delle partite, un indice delle migliori combinazioni e un elenco dei risultati dei principali tornei giocati nel periodo precedente all'uscita del volume. È presente spesso anche un'appendice curata direttamente dalla FIDE, con notizie sui congressi e sulle nomine di grandi maestri e maestri internazionali.
