Charles François Philibert Masson (1762 in Blamont — 1807 in Coblenz) was a Frenchman who is notable for the books that he published. His Secret Memoirs of the Court of St Petersburg described the court of Catherine the Great and Paul I of Russia. They are still in print. Charles François Philibert Masson was a member of the Institut de France He became private secretary to grandduke Alexander of Russia, the man who became Tsar Alexander I in 1805. He lived in Germany for a while before returning to France where he published his Mémoires secrets sur la Russie.

Charles François Philibert Masson was a member of the Institut de France The Frenchman started his career as an apprentice watchmaker in Neuchâtel, but he was more interested in the arts and traveled to Russia where he became the tutor of the children of Count Nikolai Saltykov, the Minister of War. The count made him his major domus. He made himself popular in the élite of Saint Petersburg through his wit, his taste in literature and his conversation. He became private secretary to grandduke Alexander of Russia, the man who became Tsar Alexander I in 1805. Charles François Philibert Masson was popular in the great houses of Saint Petersburg and at court but the tyrannical Tsar Paul I expelled him from Russia as an outspoken sympathiser of the French Revolution. He lived in Germany for a while before returning to France where he published his Mémoires secrets sur la Russie. At the time of his death he worked as a French government-official, "secrétaire-général de la préfecture", in Coblenz by the Rhine, in those days a French city. (en)

В юности работал подмастерьем часовщика в Невшателе. Переехал в Россию в конце 1786 года по предложению старшего брата Пьера-Андре Массона, который убедил П. И. Мелиссино принять его преподавателем в Артиллерийский и инженерный кадетский корпус. Во время службы в корпусе познакомился с Аракчеевым. С 1789 года — один из адъютантов графа Н. И. Салтыкова (вёл его переписку с иностранными корреспондентами) и гувернёр его сыновей, камер-юнкеров Дмитрия, Александра и Сергея. Получив эту должность, был произведён из поручика в капитаны драгунского полка. Не без покровительства Салтыкова Массон был определён учителем математики к великим князьям. В 1795 году назначен секретарём к великому князю Александру Павловичу с зачислением в Екатеринославский гренадёрский полк. В этом же году женился на дочери барона Розена. Павел I, вступив на престол, заподозрил братьев Массонов в якобинских симпатиях и в конце 1796 распорядился выдворить их из Петербурга в Курляндию. До 1800 года Шарль Массон не мог выхлопотать разрешения на въезд во Францию. Его жена и маленькая дочь оставались в России. В конце 1790-х годов Массон на некоторое время нашёл приют в Пруссии, в имении одного из своих знакомых, графа Лендорфа, где и написал «Секретные записки». После четырёх лет странствий он наконец вернулся на родину и по протекции Л. Бонапарта устроился в Кобленце в администрацию департамента . В 1803 году было напечатано составленное им «Статистическое описание департамента Рейн-Мозель». Дочь Массона, красавица Ольга, вела в Петербурге жизнь куртизанки.
