- John Jordan "Buck" O'Neil Jr. (November 13, 1911 – October 6, 2006) was a first baseman and manager in the Negro American League, mostly with the Kansas City Monarchs. After his playing days, he worked as a scout and became the first African American coach in Major League Baseball. In his later years he became a popular and renowned speaker and interview subject, helping to renew widespread interest in the Negro leagues, and played a major role in establishing the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022 as an executive. (en)

Il opéra exclusivement en Negro League, notamment pour les Kansas City Monarchs, d'abord comme joueur, puis comme joueur-manager de 1948 à 1955. Il est le premier Noir à occuper un poste d'instructeur au sein d'une franchise de ligue majeure chez les Chicago Cubs à partir de 1962 après avoir occupé un poste de recruteur, toujours chez les Cubs, depuis 1956. Afroamerykanin, z powodu ograniczeń rasowych miał kłopoty z kontynuowaniem nauki w rodzinnej Florydzie. Pracował m.in. na polu selerów u boku ojca, następnie wyjechał do krewnych i uczył się w murzyńskiej szkole średniej. W 1934 opuścił Florydę i występował w półprofesjonalnych meczach baseballu, m.in. u boku Satchela Paige, później pierwszego zawodnika lig murzyńskich uhonorowanego miejscem w Hall of Fame Baseballu. W 1937 podpisał kontrakt z drużyną Memphis Red Sox w ramach Negro American League, rok później przeniósł się do Kansas City Monarchs.
