Axel T. Brunger (born November 25, 1956) is a German American biophysicist. He is Professor of Molecular and Cellular Physiology at Stanford University, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. He served as the Chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology (2013–2017).

November 1956 in Leipzig) ist ein deutsch-US-amerikanischer Biologe und Kristallograph. Er ist Professor an der Stanford University. Brünger studierte Physik und Mathematik an der Universität Hamburg und schloss 1980 mit dem Diplom in Physik ab. Danach ging er an die TU München, an der er 1982 in Biophysik bei Klaus Schulten promoviert wurde. Als Post-Doktorand war er 1982/83 bei Martin Karplus an der Harvard University und 1984 am Max-Planck-Institut für Biochemie bei Dieter Oesterhelt und Robert Huber. 1985 bis 1987 war er wieder in Harvard bei Martin Karplus. 1987 wurde er Assistant Professor für molekulare Biophysik und Biochemie an der Yale University und forschte außerdem am Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). 1991 wurde er Associate (de)
